Michter’s traces its legacy back to the earliest days of the United States – originally founded by John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania in 1753 and sought by General George Washington to fortify his troops at Valley Forge. Today Michter’s whiskeys are cream of the American crop with releases priced as high as $5,000 a bottle. Michter’s has built a new, ultra-modern distillery under the guidance of industry veteran and Master Distiller Pamela Heilmann. Not on the KY Bourbon Trail and not open to the public, I had the opprtunity to go inside the Michter’s distillery to discover the secrets of maintaining 250-year old traditions with the cutting edge of whiskey-making science.
