The Perfect Mint Julep @ Whiskey Bear Bar

Whiskey Bear was born out of our desire to share our love of whiskey and other spirits with our guests, and our Tasting Events are designed to further the dialogue and create unique experiences during which guests can learn more about the “Water of Life.”
Despite having just five ingredients – mint, sugar, water, spirit, and ice – the Mint Julep is one of the most misunderstood (and often mis-made) cocktails.
Join us for a little illumination on the history of the julep where we’ll trace its course from the earliest days of distillation in the Middle East through the art of making spirits in Northern Europe and across the Atlantic to the development of Kentucky’s first breakfast cocktail.
Along the way, we’ll explore how those five items came together to make an iconic yet frequently mangled drink.
We’ll finish with a hands-on lesson in making the Perfect Mint Julep and share some exotic recipes sure to enliven any Kentucky party.
We’ll send you home with your own Mint Julep cup and some fresh mint to practice your new skills.

Tim Knittel is a professional bourbon educator with almost a decade of experience. He is a former bourbon industry insider as the Culinary Center General Manager and Homeplace Host at the Woodford Reserve Distillery. He holds the title of Executive Bourbon Steward through the Stave & Thief Society which is currently the highest certification available for a bourbon education professional. He sits on the Tasting Table at Distiller.com and writes for Distiller.com, Artisan Spirit Magazine and other industry publications and is Adjunct Professor of Bourbon Studies and Tourism & Event Management at Midway University.
